MAZINGER Z VS ANKOKU DAISHOGUN

STORY:

The movie starts in typical Mazinger Z fashion. Koji and the gang are hanging out in a boat enjoying tunes and their own company after the defeat of Dr. Hell. A mysterious man in cloaks comes to the group and tells them that the world will soon be attacked by the Mikenes Empire. As they celebrate strange and powerful new mecha monsters appear all around the world attacking mercilessly. Duke Gorgon has gone to the powerful Ankoku Daishogun for help against Mazinger Z and he has given him some of his mechas.

The gang hear of the attack and Mazinger Z takes off to Tokyo to battle the enemy there. These new mechs are must stranger than the ones Mazinger has fought before and they can also talk which shock Koji. As he battles them a few more attack the Institute causing great damage, taking Diana Ace out of the battle, and, more importantly severely injuring Koji's brother. Koji is told of this and uses his rage to destroy the remaining mecha monsters in the city then takes off for the Institute but too late, the mecha monsters have already left. With the army he was given in tatters Gorgon returns to Ankoku Daishogun who is not pleased but decided to send another army under his own general.

Koji returns to find his brother dying, desperately needing a blood transfusion. Knowing he shares the same blood type with his brother, Koji volunteers and the transfer is made. Shio lives but Koji is weakened by the blood loss, then news come of an inpending attack. Koji knows he is weak, he can barely stand, but he also knows that none of that matters. If he stays in beds he dies anyway so might as well go down fighting. Koji says his emotional good-byes to Shio and Sayaka then flies off.

Koji is attacked almost immediately after he docks with Mazinger by a monster mecha but he is able to defeat is easily. He takes the Scrander and flies to fight the new threat when almost immediately one of his wings is broken and he falls finding himself facing a complete unit of monster mechs. With both Koji and Mazinger Z so terribly weakened they have no chance and are mercilessly knocked around by the monster mechs each attack doing more and more damage. Finally Mazinger Z is impaled against a wall by a trident and electrocuted into unconciousness. The scene switches to mountains as the strange man proclaims that now is the time of Great Mazinger and removes his cloak revealing Prof. Kabuto, Koji's father. With that the Brain Condor takes to the sky and docs with Great Mazinger. The scene moves back to the mecha monsters... they move in for the kill...

As they are about to finish Mazinger Z off the sky crackles with lightning and a mecha monster is destroyed. They turn to look shocked as another Mazinger stands before them. Koji awakens and pull himself off the wall. Great throws Z one of his swords to defend himself with then starts cutting a path of destruction throughout the enemy mechas.

Koji is able to defeat the one he battles then both Great and Z finish off the general with the Double Burning Fire. From the burning ruins of the mechas Ankoku Daishogun appears warning that this is not over. Tetsuya tells Koji that Great Mazinger is Mazinger Z's brother but when Koji tries to get more information Tetsuya just flies off leaving Koji to wonder who that was. And, with that, the movie ends.

OPINION:

Of all the Mazinger movies this one probably had the best story to it. As a young kid it was always frustrating for me to accept that after fighting 100+ mechs from Dr Hell that these two, puny mechs would be able to defeat my hero, Mazinger Z. This movie is much easier to accept considering the odds were more against Koji and that Mazinger Z was never completely defeated, he still managed to help Great. Also the emotion was stronger in this one. When Koji goes to fight for the final time in the movie it is truly an emotional scene because, unlike so many other battles, everyone involved truly believe this is the last one. They all realize that Koji will not be coming back from this one. When Koji and Sayaka say their good-byes it is as close as they come to actually admitting their feelings for each other in the entire series. The movie is exciting, has lots of actions, and has a good story. A must watch for Mazinger fans.
